In 2011, I was part of a team of teenagers to travel to South Africa to teach and renovate a school in a township area. I raised £3000 for this volunteer project, both for the ticket and everything needed when we were out there. We did this near KwaZulu-Natal. We were in South Africa for 3 weeks and tought English, Maths and music to the children. We completely renovated the classrooms and built a wall that had fallen.
Living
This was my first experience to date of having a host family. They were a lovely South African family from Durban. I ate with them and slept in one of the older childrens rooms. The best part was getting to try the food that they cooked and see how actual life was for then in South Africa. Another bonus, they know the best places to visit!
The teaching
Teaching the children was invaluable. Not only for me but for the children and teachers. They all valued our presence their so much and were extremely attentive. I taught mainly English and this was the start of my teaching experience. The children were smart and talented, it was interesting seeing how little speaking a different language was important. Not that much English is required of the student for it to be taught to them, I guess that is why it is so easy to teach English world wide.
On the last day the students and teachers held a leaving party for us. It was beautiful and emotional. The kids made us cards and were very sad to see us leave. The showed us their traditional South African dance and gave us beaded jewellery for gifts.
